Ayat Shrug

Ayat means love in Ilocano, and this shrug is designed to embody just that—love, warmth, and a comforting embrace. Perfect for layering in the unpredictable seasons of spring, fall, and even winter, the Ayat Shrug carries the our culture, infused with deep personal memories.

Crafted from the kusikus design of binakol, this fabric is known for its mesmerizing, psychedelic patterns, once believed to ward off negative energies. The grey textile is sourced from Bangar, La Union, while the beige variation hails from Paoay, Ilocos Norte, each woven by skilled artisans over a standing loom.

The inspiration for this shrug came to me during a music camp that my husband and I hosted in Marin County, San Francisco. The weather was ever-changing—warm under the sun yet suddenly cool as the afternoon fog rolled in. It reminded me of the unpredictability of San Francisco summers, where one moment you’re basking in sunshine and the next, you’re reaching for a cozy layer.

At that time, my father was in the final days of his life. I spoke to him even when he couldn’t respond, longing for a connection, for something to hold onto. As a mother, I still had to give, even while grieving. In those moments, I wished for a piece of clothing that could wrap me in comfort—a physical manifestation of love and a gentle reminder that I, too, was held. From that longing, the Ayat Shrug was born.
